Who is Israel?

Feb 16, 2025    Anthony Delgado

The sermon explores the question of "Who is Israel?" based on Romans 9:1–13. The message highlights the estrangement of Israel from Christ, the adoption of outsiders (Gentiles), and the true nature of God's people.

This sermon challenges listeners to examine their faith and recognize that being part of God’s people is not about heritage but about trusting in Christ.

The Israelites as a Nation

Paul expresses deep sorrow for Israel's rejection of Christ, even though they had received God’s covenants, laws, and promises. Their rejection of Jesus led to their spiritual separation. Pastor Anthony warns against taking God’s blessings for granted and encourages faithfulness to God’s kingdom.

The Israelites as God’s Children

Paul argues that not all who are physically descended from Israel are truly Israel. He uses Abraham’s sons, Isaac and Ishmael, to demonstrate that God's people are defined by His promise, not just lineage. Similarly, Jacob was chosen over Esau before birth, showing that God's people have always been those elected by His promise, not merely physical descendants.

The Israelites as Recipients of God's Promise

The passage from Malachi clarifies that when God says, “I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau,” it refers to nations rather than individuals. The true Israel is made up of those who respond to God’s promise by faith, not by works or nationality. Paul emphasizes that righteousness comes through faith in Christ, making the church—Jew and Gentile alike—the true covenant people of God.
